DEAN OF STUDENT LIFE

Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Barrie Middle & Upper School Dean of Student Life (grades 6-12) with employment beginning on July 1, 2021.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school currently serves 300 students in two divisions: Barrie Montessori (18-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Middle & Upper School (6th to 12th grade). The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

Barrie is located in Silver Spring, Maryland outside Washington, D.C. and within one mile of the Metro subway. ABOUT THE POSITION & QUALIFICATIONS

Joining Barrie during an exciting time, the Dean of Student Life should have experience as a progressive educator who believes in restorative discipline; experience with leading faculty professional development related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and a commitment to a student-centered learning environment focused on project-based learning. This full-time, twelve-month position will report to the Head of Barrie Middle & Upper School.

The position has the following qualifications:

· Master’s degree in education, school leadership, or a related field preferred.

· Minimum five years teaching and leading student life initiatives preferred.

· Commitment to supporting an intentionally diverse and inclusive community.

· Must demonstrate cross-cultural competency.

· Experience leading faculty professional development related to diversity, equity, and inclusion strongly preferred.

· Demonstrate experience supporting the growth of curriculum, community, and student leadership related to DEI.

· Experience working and partnering with parents to address student social and emotional health and well-being.

· Excellent communication skills, detail-oriented, and ability to connect with diverse and wide-ranging constituencies, including but not limited to, students, parents, and faculty.

· A sense of humor and commitment to building rapport with colleagues.

Skills:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage advisors, coordinate and develop advisory program, and plan Community Time (co-lead Assemblies with Head of Middle & Upper School; organize clubs/committees, etc.).
Manage initiatives to ensure there is a positive school spirit in the MUS division.
Oversee student life disciplinary issues for Barrie MUS grades 6-12, including the administration of Student Success Agreements (SSA) when necessary.
Advise and oversee Student Government Association (SGA), student activities committee, and clubs to support vibrant student leadership.
Attend and manage student events, including but not limited to, graduation, prom, and student dances.
Support retention/admissions events.
Oversee calendar related to student life events, including August Opening Days and end-of-year student life activities.
Coordinate retreats for middle and upper school.
Support high level of student attendance and timeliness, ensuring appropriate interventions with students and families as needed.
Coordinate with Admissions to plan student visits, conduct admissions interviews, and read applications.
Support parent education related to school student life goals (e.g. Conversations that Count and Restorative Practices).
Work closely with the Head of MUS and Dean of Studies in MUS on retention/enrollment.
Collaborate with the Director of School and Family Services and Learning Specialist to meet MUS students' social-emotional needs, including supporting diversity initiatives.
Serve as an advisor for eight to twelve students.
Serve as a member of the MUS leadership team.
