Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Barrie Prep Music Teacher (grades 6-12) with employment beginning in August of 2019.


ABOUT THE SCHOOL


Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education.  The school currently serves 300 students in two divisions: Barrie Montessori (18-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Prep (6th to 12th grade).  The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

ABOUT THE POSITION & QUALIFICATIONS

 

Joining Barrie during an exciting time, the Music Teacher should be a talented individual who is trained to teach music and who values student-centered and progressive education. This is a half-time to three-quarters time position that will report to the Head of Barrie Prep.  


The position has the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree required and Bachelor’s degree in Music preferred.

  • Commitment to supporting an intentionally diverse and inclusive community.

  • Demonstrated success teaching to a range of learners.  

  • Effective classroom management skills.  

  • Places value on the learning process versus product.

  • A sense of humor and commitment to building camaraderie with colleagues.


Skills:

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach one trimester each of music to all middle school students (sixth, seventh, and eighth graders).

  • Teach full-year student-centered Band course that teaches students multiple instruments, including, but not limited to, piano, bass, guitar, and drums. At Barrie, students choose the songs that are performed in collaboration with the Music Teacher.

  • Help students showcase their abilities at Arts Nights.

  • Attend bi-weekly faculty meetings and weekly department meetings.

  • Curriculum development.

  • Advise a group of seven to eight middle or upper school students.
