Description:

Responsible for managing the grants process from start to finish. Responsible for researching issues related to intimate partner violence, proposal writing, application tracking and assistance with on-going compliance reporting related to government, foundation, corporate and individual grants.  Position will work collaboratively with program, finance and development staff to identify and pursue funding opportunities, stay abreast of program activities, outcomes and new initiatives, disseminate topical research summaries, and coordinate grant applications and reporting with program, finance, data team and grantor staff.  Using this knowledge, the Grant Writer/Coordinator will translate information into timely, compelling proposals meeting deadlines.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Takes ownership of the grants process, proactively working with all departments and funding sources.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the finance and development staff to support grant-related activities necessary to build and maintain relationships with granting organizations. Assists with research, identifying government, foundation and corporate grant opportunities.
  • Maintains good relationships with agency directors, project managers, and program staff to understand current program activities and initiatives, to determine the specifics of how a grant award will be used, including all aspects of staffing, budget and outcomes.   
  • Writes drafts of grant proposals, vets with project managers, and ensures that all criteria of the specific grant applications are met through the proposals. Submit applications following specific guidelines and by the deadline.  
  • In consultation with the Project Directors and the accounting team, builds basic budgets and completes the budget forms for the grants.
  • Maintains a close partnership and consistent communication with the Data Systems team regarding data needs for grant submission and subsequent reporting and compliance.
  • Stays abreast of current research/best-practices in the field; shares research summaries with agency staff.
  • Creates and maintains a current library of data, statistics and other information related to House of Ruth Maryland programs and the issue of intimate partner violence, to support grant proposals. 
  • Maintains a method for tracking all grant applications, including potential opportunities, various aspects of writing each proposal and staff responsible for each, deadlines for submission, pending applications, reporting requirements, and timelines for renewal. 
  • Works collaboratively with program and finance staff to track financial implications of grants by program, including amount requested, amount awarded and the allocation of funds. 
  • Works collaboratively with project managers to assure that HRM meets grant compliance requirements, including writes and reviews interim reports for grants when required, and assists with financial compliance and program reporting as needed.
  • Facilitates team discussion of opportunities for funding and current status of grant fundraising initiatives. Stays current on agency/program financial position to inform grant seeking and compliance reporting. 
  • Represents agency at funder meetings and other events as needed.

Skills:

Experience/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (liberal arts or social services preferred) with two years of experience in a position requiring extensive writing or report preparation. Experience working with budgets and financial documents helpful.  Experience can substitute for degree. 
  • Experience writing government, with a focus on federal, and foundation applications leading to successful funding preferred.
  • Must have ability to read requests for proposal, understand key components to explain to others, and align with agency needs and strategic focus.
  • Must have excellent English grammar, proof-reading/editing, knowledge of proper citation style, and oral communication skills.
  • Must be organized, able to work independently, quickly, and accurately in a fast-paced environment, able to work effectively with all levels of staff and able to understand intimate partner violence and how it affects the client population.
  • Computer proficiency including knowledge of databases, internet, required. Software experience using Microsoft WORD (advanced features), PowerPoint, EXCEL, and Adobe preferred.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Remote work eligible; will need to attend in-office functions and meetings when assigned.
