Introduction
Barrie School seeks candidates for the 2023-2024 school year for the position of Learning Specialist, with employment beginning in August 2023.
Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school serves to empower our students to expand their intellectual abilities, develop their creative talents, and discover their passions to make a positive impact in a rapidly changing world. The school currently serves nearly 400 students in two divisions: Lower School (Infants to 6th grade) and Middle & Upper School (6th to 12th grade). The school is also home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves over 500 families each summer.

Responsibilities
-
Advocate for students with complex learning profiles in grades 4-8.

Track a caseload of students who have accommodation plans.
-
Organize and maintain records related to students with diagnosed learning differences.

Support staff with professional development on accommodation plans and meeting students’ needs.

Maintain communication with families of students with accommodations or other learning-related challenges.
-
Refer families to tutors or other learning supports, as needed.

Teach a Middle School class on executive functioning, organization, planning, and other learning-related strategies.

Participate in the Student Support Team and respond to the needs of students, families, and teachers.

Support admissions by meeting with students and families and reviewing applications.

Run or co-facilitate family education sessions in the evenings.

Run a Fall Expedition or Extended Study Week (ESW) program in the spring of each year.

Perform supervisory and substitute duties as needed (i.e. study period, sub-on-call, car circle)

An ability to diagnose and assess learning disabilities is a plus but not required.

Other duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School or Head of Middle & Upper School.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Special Education preferred.

Minimum 3 years of experience in an educational setting.

Prior experience working with Montessori preferred.

Detail-oriented; positive attitude.

Appreciation for and experience working in a diverse educational environment.

Experience with executive functioning coaching
