Position Summary: The Overnight Housekeeper is an essential staff position that is part of the Shelter Operations team primarily responsible for the day to day cleanliness of an 84 bed residential facility serving individuals and families that have experienced intimate partner and sexual violence.  The Housekeeper maintains a clean, tidy and safe environment, including a nightly cleaning routine of the main floor, Dining area, and childcare spaces in HRM’s Emergency Shelter program for individuals and families experiencing intimate partner and sexual violence.  This position is part of a team that ensures rooms are turned over and prepared for occupancy, donations and supplies are stored, prepared or distributed as needed, and safety hazards are identified and reported.  Shelter Residents are traumatized both by the violence they experienced, and the sudden experience of homelessness.  Families may also have unrelated trauma experiences from their lives.  The Housekeeper must be comfortable engaging traumatized people in a sensitive manner and must be comfortable working in a Voluntary Services program model. 

Standard Schedule: This position is 100% on site and based at the confidential shelter location in Baltimore City.  Hours are Saturday – Tuesday Midnight-8am for a total of 32 hours per week.  As an essential staff position, the Housekeeper is expected to report to work in weather emergencies, and on Holidays that fall within scheduled work days. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

·         Conducts nightly cleaning routine focused on the main floor of the Shelter building, including the common areas, staff offices, kitchen and dining area, and Childcare spaces.  This routine is designed to ensure that a high standard of cleanliness is maintained daily and includes, but is not limited to, sanitizing bathrooms, vacuuming, mopping floors, removing trash, cleaning walls, dusting, and cleaning windows and glass doors.

·         As part of operations team, assists in room turnover including removing and disposal of abandoned items left in shelter bedrooms and apartments, thorough cleaning, and staging the room for new occupants.

·         As part of operations team, completed semi-regular deep cleaning activities for the building as scheduled and as emergencies require.

·         Launders linen as necessary to meet “turnover” demands.

·         Distributes material goods to residents in accordance to program procedures.  Provides residents with cleaning supplies, and assists residents in learning cleaning practices when concerns are noted.  Initiates a meeting with Housekeeping and Operations Lead if more assistance and support is needed.

·         Prepares pre-packaged toiletry and linen supplies to be distributed to new residents at intake.

·         Assists in relocation and storage of donations that have been received and inventoried.

·         Reports the need for maintenance repairs and safety hazards. 

·         Completes daily documentation of operations activities. 

·         Provide front desk coverage for colleague on break and in emergencies.

·         Participates in regularly scheduled one on one supervision and team meetings as scheduled.

Experience/ Requirements:

·         One year experience performing cleaning in a residential, hospital or similar scale business.  High school diploma/ GED equivalent may substitute for experience.

·         High degree of reliability in completing tasks assigned in the manner expected.

·         Ability to report to work in adverse weather conditions and Holidays as scheduled.

·         Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.

 

Highly Preferred Skills include:

o   Oral fluency in English and another language (Spanish, Urdu, Arabic, French highly preferred)

o   Effective verbal, listening, and writing skills, with a strong ability to relate to a diverse range of individuals including victims, children, donors, and service providers.

o   Experience with conflict resolution/ mediation.

o   Ability to understand intimate partner violence and how it affects the client population.
