Description:

The Ruth’s Closet Assistant Store Manager is a non-exempt, full time, benefits-eligible employee. The Assistant Store Manager is responsible for the smooth operation of Ruth’s Closet in the absence of the Store Manager and must therefore have a working knowledge of critical, daily operational systems for Ruth’s Closet, including sales transactions, donation receiving, merchandise preparation and pricing, merchandising, stockroom, and volunteer staffing coverage. The Assistant Store Manager supervises and works closely with interns and volunteers to provide quality customer service to shoppers and to donors at Ruth’s Closet. The Assistant Store Manager works with minimal supervision and is responsible for opening and closing the store on time, managing the sales floor, conducting sales transactions, direction and support of volunteers, and handling emergencies or unanticipated events.  

Primary Responsibilities: 

  •   Weekly work schedule: must work every Saturday; flexible hours to cover the store business hours and events, including some Mondays (40 hours per week)
  • Open and close Ruth’s Closet on time, adhering to shop opening and closing routines
  • Operate the NCR point of sale system, conduct sales transactions and ensure that only authorized individuals have access to the cash register
  • Maintain a staffing and volunteer schedule and plan that ensures appropriate store coverage including in the absence of the Store Manager
  • Greet, assist, and make customers, donors and volunteers feel welcomed
  • Straighten merchandise on the sales floor and fill in displays as items are sold
  • Engage customers by inviting them to sign up for the Ruth’s Closet e-mail list, providing information about Ruth’s Closet, the House of Ruth Maryland, B-More Bags and donation guidelines
  • Accept donations dropped off at Ruth’s Closet, including offer and provide assistance as needed to bring donations into the shop, offer a donation receipt to the donor and complete same, and move donations to the designated storage area in the stockroom
  • Answer the telephone and take messages, answer questions, and pass along information as needed
  • Maintain an exciting, visually stimulating store that is clean and well organized
  • Ensure the check-out counter is free of clutter, organized, and well stocked with shopping bags, tissue paper and other supplies needed for sales transactions
  • Empty dressing rooms and return garments and other items to the sales floor
  • Organize stockroom supplies and merchandise for efficient operations
  • Attend and participate in volunteer meetings
  • Participate in HRM New Hire Orientation including Intimate Partner Violence education in order to increase awareness and the ability to respond appropriately in the event that a customer or volunteer discloses intimate partner violence
  • Assist in preparing for and running special events for Ruth’s Closet
  • Troubleshoot operations issues at Ruth’s Closet
  • Maintain standards and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the premises, of staff and volunteers
  • Pick up donations from retail stores (for example Eileen Fisher, Freesia) when volunteers are unavailable to do the pick-ups
  • Sort donations and stage merchandise for the store in the stockroom or at the warehouse 

Skills:

Experience/Qualifications:

·         High school diploma required, Bachelor’s degree preferred

·         Experience in a position involving customer service required; sales experience in retail environment preferred

·         Experience working with volunteers a plus

·         Must be punctual, reliable, and must have own transportation

·         Must have high ethical standards and successfully complete a background check

·         Must be highly motivated, able to work independently, and exercise good judgment and discretion

·         Must be able to follow direction and when needed, initiate action and make sound decisions; must be resourceful, even tempered, and a skilled problem solver

·         Must be warm, outgoing and capable of engaging effectively with people from diverse backgrounds including donors, customers, volunteers and interns

·         Must demonstrate flexibility and be able to multi-task

·         Must be interested in growing Ruth’s Closet and House of Ruth Maryland

·         Ability to understand intimate partner violence and how it affects the client population
