Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Middle & Upper School Spanish Teacher with employment for the 2021-2022 school year. 

About The School

Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education.  The school currently serves 300 students in two divisions: Barrie Montessori (18-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Middle & Upper School (6th to 12th grade).  The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

Position & Qualifications

Barrie (grades 6-12) is seeking a middle and upper school Spanish teacher for the 2021-2022 academic year. The ideal candidate will have native or near native fluency in the target language and an interest in supporting young people’s growth as Spanish speakers. The position will involve collaborating closely with the lead Spanish teacher on implementing lessons and providing feedback on student performance. Finally, applicants from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. 



Skills:

Responsibilities 

  • Assist in running on-campus, in-person classroom activities at the Spanish II, Spanish III, and Spanish IV levels 

  • Attend classes Tuesday/Thursdays 12:30-1:50 and Wednesdays/Fridays 8:30-9:50 

  • Provide feedback on student performance and work 

  • Serve as a conversation partner for students 

Required qualifications 

  • Demonstrated interest in working with adolescents and teenagers 

  • Demonstrated cross-cultural competence, empathy, and commitment to antiracism

  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish 

Preferred qualifications

  • University or graduate-level study in Spanish

  • Classroom teaching or tutoring experience 

  • Knowledge of Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) as a methodology for immersing students in the target language. 

  • Understanding of and familiarity with American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards
