Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Long-Term Middle and Upper School (6th and 9th grade) Substitute Humanities Teacher with employment beginning on or about December 6, 2021, and ending on April 1, 2022. 

About the School

Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school currently serves nearly 400 students in two divisions: Barrie Lower School (12 months to 5th grade) and Barrie Middle & Upper School (6th to 12th grade). The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

Position & Qualifications

Joining Barrie during an exciting time, the Long-Term Substitute Humanities Teacher should be a progressive educator with a willingness to support project-based learning as a methodology to empower students to learn important twenty-first century skills such as collaboration, teamwork, and critical thinking. The Long-Term Substitute would teach 6th and 9th Grade Humanities, both of which focus on United States history and literature. Humanities courses at Barrie are interdisciplinary and incorporate English language arts, literature, history, religion, economics, and philosophy, among other disciplines. This full-time position will report to the Head of Barrie Middle & Upper School.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of United States history and literature 

  • Passion for both middle and upper school humanities 

  • Knowledge of project-based learning (PBL) as a teaching methodology. 

  • Full time middle and/or high school teaching experience preferred but not required. 

Responsibilities

  • Teach one section of 6th grade Humanities and one section of 9th grade Humanities. 

  • Co-lead 6th grade advisory sessions twice weekly.

  • Be available from 8:05-4:15 daily to perform other duties as assigned, potentially including proctoring study periods, supervising student clubs, and more.
