Position Summary:

The Recovery Specialist provides supportive services to families experiencing substance abuse that are involved with the Department of Child Services. Services are provided in the home or community based setting. He or she provides a strength-based approach, in assisting the client in connecting with recovery community supports and community resources, building on the client's strengths, abilities and resources. He or she works to decrease or stop substance use, and increase that recovery is possible and increase life skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Schedules and complete appointments at times and locations that are convenient to the client including evenings and maintain a flexible work week that adapts as changes are needed. Involves exposure to tobacco smoke, domestic animals, household pests, mold and other conditions common to domestic environments.
  • Maintain regular communication with families by various means including phone contact, texting, and drop in services during extended business hours and by telephone and face-to-face for crisis situations.
  • Completes client documentation in a timely manner.
  • Requires travel to client home and community locations.
  • Engages client in substance abuse treatment.
  • Provide psycho education on additional, mental health, domestic violence, and conflict management.
  • Develop a Relapse Recovery Plan in collaboration with the client.
  • Facilitate transportation.
  • Participate in Child and Family Team Meetings
  • Assist with coordinating services
  • Assist with parent/child interactions and develop parenting skills specifically parenting sober: what that looks like through modeling &/or coaching.
  • Observe parent-child interactions and provide parent education.
  • Completes predetermined number of direct service hours.
  • Provides transportation to children and families.

Skills:

Education/Certification/Licensure:

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or directly-related human service field from an accredited college. Other Bachelor's degrees will be accepted in combination with a minimum of five years' experience working directly with families in the child welfare system.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to use private car to transport self and others and must comply with the contract requirements concerning minimum car insurance coverage.
  • Certified Recovery Specialist training, testing and certification, including addiction certification preferred.

 

Skills:

  • A demonstrated ability to share personal recovery experiences and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationship
  • Knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes
  • The analytic ability, knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individual members in self-directed recovery

 

Physical Requirements:

To accomplish the essential functions of the position, one must be physically able to operate or work with computers, calculators, reference books, computer software applications, phones, and other standard office equipment. The physical activities of the position include talking, reaching, grasping, light lifting, bending, squatting, and other repetitive motions.
