Position Summary: 

The Mentor Coach uses research-based adult learning principles to support teachers in implementing curriculum with fidelity, while fostering the progress of children’s school readiness. The Mentor Coach modifies coaching activities to meet the changing needs of the program and is responsible for annual staff pre-service and monthly professional development days.
 
Essential Functions:

  • Builds collaborative relationships with teachers to determine needs and goals for each individual classroom. 
  • Assesses teacher needs, sets goals, creates action plans, reviews and updates goals/action plans as needed.
  • Observes and documents classroom practices and uses support strategies to learn, refine, or improve teaching practices. Provides feedback to teachers when necessary.
  • Demonstrates teaching practices and ways to achieve engaging interactions and environments.
  • Maintains and models professionalism through respectful and confidential interactions with colleagues.
  • Obtains and analyzes data to determine progress and needs of teachers and classrooms.
  • Utilizes extensive knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and adult learning principles to ensure alignment with agency philosophy and approach to early childhood education.
  • Applies knowledge of the Office of Head Start’s frameworks: Effective Everyday Practice, Child Development and Early Learning.
  • Seeks assistance from other professionals (community, coaches, or supervisors) as needed and maintains knowledge of current practices in the field.
  • Applies agency policies and procedures, and contributes to a positive workplace culture.
  • Develops and conducts small and large group high impact professional development training for teachers.
  • Secures community resources for professional development that result in In-Kind donations to the program.
  • Authors reports, and internal/external communications.
  • Communicates effectively with stakeholders, Governing Body and Policy Council, program leaders, teachers, staff, families, and community.

Skills:

Must be 19.5 years of age or older.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must demonstrate regular, predictable attendance and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Certification/Licensure:

  • Bachelor's Degree in education, child development, family studies, sociology, or other related field.

Experience Required: 

  • 2-3 years previous experience

  • Organization and time management
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Ability to identify problems and come up with innovative solutions
  • Strong connection with the community and ability to maintain positive relationships

Physical Requirements:

To accomplish the essential functions of the position, one must be physically able to operate or work with computers, calculators, reference books, computer software applications, phones, and other standard office equipment. The physical activities of the position include talking, reaching, grasping, light lifting, bending, squatting, and other repetitive motions.
 
Working Conditions:

  • Work is considered sedentary and performed mainly in a pleasant office environment with rare exposure to environmental factors.
  • Minimal safety hazards with general office working conditions.
