Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Barrie Prep Dean of Student Life (grades 6-12) with employment beginning on July 1, 2019

About the School

Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education.  The school currently serves 300 students in two divisions: Barrie Montessori (18-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Prep (6th to 12th grade).  The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

About the Position and Qualifications 

Joining Barrie during an exciting time, the Dean of Student Life should have experience as a progressive educator who believes in restorative discipline, has experience with project management, and demonstrates a commitment to a student-centered learning environment focused on project-based learning. The Dean of Student Life is also responsible for teaching one or two classes in his or her subject area. This full-time position will report to the Head of Barrie Prep.

The position has the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, school leadership, or a related field preferred.  
  • At least five years teaching and some experience leading student life initiatives.
  • Commitment to supporting an intentionally diverse and inclusive community.
  • Must demonstrate cross-cultural competency and experience with multicultural education.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to connect with diverse and wide-ranging constituencies, including but not limited to, students, parents, and faculty.
  • A sense of humor and commitment to building rapport with colleagues.
  • Be available for in-house professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Manage advisors, coordinate and develop advisory program, and plan Community Time (co-lead Assemblies with Head of Prep; organize clubs/committees, etc.).
  • Manage initiatives to ensure there is a positive school spirit in the Prep division.
  • Oversee student life disciplinary issues for Barrie Prep grades 6-12, including the administration of Student Success Agreements (SSA) when necessary.
  • Support student government and student activities committees to support vibrant student leadership.
  • Support retention/admissions events.
  • Oversee calendar related to student life issues and events, including August Opening Days and end-of-year student life activities.
  • Coordinate retreats for middle and upper school.
  • Support high level of student attendance and timeliness, ensuring appropriate interventions with students and families as needed.
  • Coordinate with Admissions to plan student visits, conduct admissions interviews, and read applications.
  • Support parent education related to school student life goals (e.g. Conversations that Count).
  • Work closely with the Head of Prep and Dean of Prep Studies on Prep calendar and issues of retention/enrollment.
  • Collaborate with the Director of School and Family Services and Learning Specialist to meet Prep students' social-emotional needs, including supporting diversity initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned, based on needs of the organization.
  • Serve as an advisor for eight to twelve students.
