Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Barrie Prep Dean of Student Life (grades 6-12) with employment beginning on July 1, 2019.
About the School
Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school currently serves 300 students in two divisions: Barrie Montessori (18-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Prep (6th to 12th grade). The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.
Barrie is located in Silver Spring, Maryland outside Washington, D.C. and within one mile of the Metro subway. Our verdant 45-acre campus of open fields, streams, ponds, forests, and stables provides space for learning, play, and exploration. Barrie encourages students to develop their own individual interests and talents through hands-on, experiential learning, which promotes 21st-century outcomes, including:

About the Position and Qualifications
Joining Barrie during an exciting time, the Dean of Student Life should have experience as a progressive educator who believes in restorative discipline, has experience with project management, and demonstrates a commitment to a student-centered learning environment focused on project-based learning. The Dean of Student Life is also responsible for teaching one or two classes in his or her subject area. This full-time position will report to the Head of Barrie Prep.
The position has the following qualifications:
- Master’s degree in education, school leadership, or a related field preferred.
- At least five years teaching and some experience leading student life initiatives.
- Commitment to supporting an intentionally diverse and inclusive community.
- Must demonstrate cross-cultural competency and experience with multicultural education.
- Attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to connect with diverse and wide-ranging constituencies, including but not limited to, students, parents, and faculty.
- A sense of humor and commitment to building rapport with colleagues.
- Be available for in-house professional development.
