Barrie School seeks candidates for the 2018-2019 school year for the position of School and Camp Nurse, with employment beginning in July 30, 2018. Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation for 300 students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education.
The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

ABOUT THE POSITION & QUALIFICATIONS
The school and camp nurse is a leader in the Barrie community that oversees all school health policies and programs and serves as an important member of the Administrative Leadership Team. The school nurse provides expertise and oversight of school health services and promotes health education to the students, campers and staff. Because healthy children are successful learners, Barrie’s nurse advocates for the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of students.
Routine Duties: Using clinical knowledge and judgment, the school nurse routinely performs the following on a daily or weekly basis:

Provides healthcare to students, campers and staff, and develops plans for student care based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care

Navigates Barrie’s campus on a daily basis in the Nurse Mobile (golf cart) attending to the medical needs of students of all ages and enjoying full membership in our community

Serves as liaison between school personnel, families, and community healthcare providers; and coordinates referrals to healthcare providers

Administers medication, performs health care procedures, and develops healthcare plans for acute and chronic conditions

Monitors immunizations, manages communicable diseases and provides appropriate communication about illnesses to the Barrie School community, keeping student confidentiality at the forefront

Provides health advice to school educational teams, such as the Student Support Service team

Oversees infection control measures

Participates in school events such as the Fall Festival and Spring Carnival; prepares a first aid table and oversee the safety of participants

Completes incident and medical reports as necessary

Ensures School and Camp health forms are reviewed and complete
-
Oversees the camp health office, coordinates staffing, oversees safety, health and medication management of on and off campus activities

Keeps inventory of Epipens, Narcan and AED’s located throughout the school
Long-Term Planning: Using extensive professional expertise, the school nurse leads the following preventative initiatives:

Performs appropriate health screenings on an annual basis

Provides health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings; and works with Prep and Montessori on Health classes and curriculum, and when appropriate is involved in direct teaching of Health issues

Assesses the school environment as to prevent injuries and ensure safety

Serves as an integral part of Emergency Response Team (ERT), and actively participates in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and emergencies that may occur at school

Oversees Certified Medication Technicians (CMT’s) in the school setting and delegates medication administration and healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance

Works with Students and Family Services Director to ensure students health and safety

Serves as a consultant with other school professionals, such as Extended Day, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors to assure appropriate health services support and continuity of care

Schedules and ensures that all Barrie employees are CPR and AED certified, and maintains an up to date database of these certifications

Conducts annual training of Bloodborne Pathogens and Food Allergies/Anaphylaxis and keep training records as required

Manages and train teachers on medication administration for students on and off campus, including field trips, overnight trips, and international trips.
