Position Summary:
Barrie School is seeking a STEAM Makerspace Director and Teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. The successful candidate will be a leader in Design Thinking and STEAM education who is ready to join the school during an exciting time, as the school is designing and building a Makerspace to open in the fall of 2018. The new space will be designed for STEAM-oriented learning through making, tinkering, engineering, design, and integration of art. The STEAM Makerspace Director and Teacher will be responsible for designing a comprehensive program that inspires students as they grow to be creative thinkers and learners. This person will support faculty member efforts to integrate instructional strategies, and multiple technologies that promote cooperative and project based learning through an interdisciplinary and STEAM curriculum.
Directing and Teaching Montessori Makerspace (75% of the position)

Collaborate with Barrie teachers to create a scope and sequence of STEAM educational experiences for grades K-5.

Be the lead STEAM teacher for the Montessori Maker space based on a weekly teaching schedule that is developed in collaboration with the Head of Montessori and Barrie teachers.

Identify resources, plan, and design teacher professional development activities to support professional growth in STEAM programming for Montessori classroom teachers.

Work to integrate art-thinking and making routines into the engineering and design process. Understand and be able to design, develop, assess, and manage STEAM learning experiences including those outside of the regular school day (i.e. extra-curricular activities, clubs, and Summer Camp programs).
Makerspace Lab Management and Supervision (25% of the position)

Collaborate with the Barrie Prep (6th to 12th grade) science and technology teaching team on their teaching initiatives as well as supervise the ongoing maintenance of the high end equipment for 6th to 12th grade teaching (3D printers, laser cutter, CNC machine etc)

Purchasing of tools and resources for the Barrie Montessori Maker Space. Ensure faculty is appropriately trained.

Maintain machines, tools, materials, safe use, and schedule of the Montessori Makerspace. Troubleshoot minor issues or malfunctions of hardware or software and works with hardware consulting to identify and troubleshoot major issues in the makerspace lab.

Develop and implement protocols for faculty, staff, and students to maintain a safe experience in the lab.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related content area required, Master's degree preferred.

Minimum of 5 years teaching experience preferred in either the sciences, engineering, technology and/or the arts, with a strong personal interest and exposure to all three areas, and the desire and skill to integrate across various disciplines.

Knowledge of and experience with current best-practice in inquiry and STEAM education.

Classroom experience, strong classroom management skills, and a working knowledge of Montessori educational philosophy or a willingness to learn.

Experience coaching teachers and/or leading professional development programs.

Knowledge of online educational websites, resources, platforms, and apps pertinent to the teaching of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

Varied professional experience, both in classroom settings and outside of schools;

Knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment driven instruction.

Experience in writing and designing curriculum.

Ability to inspire students and encourage creative thinking.
