Chemistry Teacher with opportunities for Science Department Chair and Makerspace Coordinator for the 2018-2019 School Year
About Barrie
Barrie is a learning institution comprised of three distinct yet mutually supportive divisions: Barrie Montessori (serving students age 18 months through grade 5, and aspiring Montessori educators at the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies); Barrie Prep (serving students in grades 6 through 12); and Barrie Camp (a summer day-camp program serving children ages 4 through 14). Barrie's mission is to empower individuals to expand their intellectual abilities, develop creative talents, and discover their passions to make a positive impact in a rapidly changing world.
Barrie serves approximately 330 students, and since our founding in 1932, has maintained a commitment to multiculturalism and diversity. Our extraordinary environment for learning is located on 45 wooded acres just outside Washington, D.C.
At Barrie, faculty appreciate students as individuals. Learning is a hands-on experience for all our students: they are fully engaged in their own education. Each division (Montessori, Prep, and Camp) plays a distinct and valuable role as an integral part of the overall institution; all serve to complement the others and advance the mission of the whole.
About the Position
Barrie Prep (grades 6-12) is seeking a Chemistry Teacher for the 2018-2019 academic year. We are looking for someone with experience and who is interested in leading our innovative Science Department as Chair. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of teaching experience, some administrative experience, a keen interest in developing young teachers, and a passion for maker programs. In addition, he or she will value project-based learning as a means to engage students meaningfully in real-world and twenty-first century experiences. The teacher we are replacing built our Maker Program, so our ideal candidate would have interest and experience in this area, and want to continue leading that program.
Over the past five plus years, the Science Department has developed a STEAM initiative which includes revamping the curriculum to incorporate engineering and maker-oriented technologies as well as a wide array of interesting electives for students in the upper school. The selected candidate will lead this effort in the middle and upper school and work with the Head of School, Head of Barrie Prep, and Dean of Studies to determine next steps.
